Dust devil is a rotating column of air. It occurs frequently in the hot area of Earth’s surface and even appears on Mars. The shape of dust devil looks like tornado, whose scale is small and can be formed in clear weather and high temperature environment. Thus, it is very suitable for experiment demonstration. However, past demonstration experiments associated with dust devil show that most experiments rely on forced convection, whereas their equipment is more expensive and the temperature variation is not obvious. Therefore, we present a simple and interesting demonstration design. It uses free heat convection of candle flame and heat flow device to demonstrate the phenomenon of dust devil and to perform the measurement of temperature. Through the three-dimensional temperature distribution, we can analyze the thermal plume mechanism of dust devil.
