The Trajectories of History: A Study on Representations of the Cepo' Incident

摘要


本研究通過田野生活的日常書寫,進而描繪出居住於花蓮縣秀姑巒溪出海口(Cepo')地方的阿美族人,關於地方上歷史事件的各種表述型式,進而回答有關「歷史、時間與記憶」三者之間的辨證。對於時間的自我表述,僅僅是歷史思維活動的源頭,透過對時間變遷的感知與自覺,則是「歷史意識」的討論範疇;而人們探究歷史意識的動機,則始終在尋找一生存的基本方向感,我從哪裡來?該往何處去?置身在時間之流中該如何自我定位等。人類從事一項歷史的行為,及最後形成了歷史知識,目的乃是為逃脫「自然時間」,及其最終所帶來的肉體死亡。在歷時性的變遷之中,秀姑巒溪出海口(Cepo')的空間由一項「地方」的指認,擴大為過去「人群聚落」的想像,聯結過去氏族遷徙四散的集體記憶,並且直接影響今日花東海岸線各阿美族聚落的分布。凡此,溯源自清代族人與國家體制衝突下的流血暴亂事件,亦是當地人們自我敘說及表敘其歷史知識/意識的起點。

Drawing on the answer, ”What is 'History'?” from archives, narration, and performance of the Amis ethnic people who live beside the estuary area of Xiu-Gu-Luan River (Hualien, Taiwan), this thesis clarifies the ways in which people perceive history. Human beings have learned the abstract idea of ”Time” from their perceptions as transmitted by their surroundings. Self-representation of time is the beginning of historical thought. Through the perception and self-knowledge of the movement of time, historical consciousness will eventually form historical knowledge. The motivation of people exploring historical consciousness is seeking understanding of a basic aspect of existence, the ”wherefrom” and ”whereto” questions, and how to orientate themselves with the flow of time. Time, as expected by one's own innate understanding can be infused into what has actually been or not been experienced. ”Human Zeit” is a result of individual mental activities, created by experience and expectation to contend with oppression from ”Naturzeit” or objective, external time. The behavior of ”doing history” by human beings, in fact is to disengage from the threat of corporeal dissolution. Under a diachronic transition, the representation of the Cepo' estuary has been enlarged from ”a place” to an imagination of ”a people” in the past, it is also connected to the collective memory of the diaspora which shaped the spread of Amis nation on the east coast of Taiwan in the modern time. As a result of the turbulent conflict between the Qing Dynasty's regime and cultures in that area, the sanguinary incident was a start of arousing their local history/consciousness.
