The Effectiveness of Character Education on Undergraduates' Attitude of Gratitude and Core Competencies in a "Chinese Traditional Medicine in Nursing" course

Background: The curriculum of character education has developed rapidly in recent years. However, nursing undergraduates have seldom been chosen as the subjects in the studies of the effectiveness of the curriculum. Purposes: This study aims to examine the effectiveness of character education on undergraduates' attitude of gratitude and core competencies in a "Chinese Traditional Medicine in Nursing" course. Method: This study applied a single team for a pre-test and post-test design. The participants in the study were 37 nursing undergraduates, chosen randomly. Attitude of gratitude was the core concept of the intervention of character education. This study was conducted in three phases over nine weeks (four hours each time per week). Instruments included an attitude of gratitude scale and a self-developed nursing core competencies checklist. Data were analyzed with the use of paired t-test set in the statistics software of SPSS 20.0. Result: After the intervention of character education, the participants' post-test scores were significantly higher than their pre-test scores on the items of "sense of abundance", "appreciation for simple pleasures", "social appreciation", and "gratitude trait" of attitude of gratitude scale. In addition, regarding the core competencies, participants' post-test scores were also significantly higher than their pre-test scores on the items of "nursing skills", "humanity caring", "communication and cooperation", "commitment to work" and "autonomous learning". Conclusion: This study showed that the intervention of character education can effectively improve undergraduates' attitude of gratitude and core competencies. It is suggested that universities should also pay attention to the cultivation of nursing students' character while preparing the students to be nursing professionals so as to help them live a well-balanced and grateful life.
