彭紹升之「慈善志業」初探

摘要

明末清初佛教居士的代表者──彭紹升（1740─1796），他生性善良，慈悲為懷，出生在江蘇長洲的彭氏望族，曾祖為翰林院侍講彭定求（1645─1719），父親為兵部尚書彭啟豐（1702─1784），從小接受儒家傳統聖賢教育的薰陶，富有仁愛之心，長大學佛以後，慈悲為懷，樂於救濟苦難眾生，於是筆者考察彭紹升的著作《二林居集》，發現其生平所參與過的慈善活動很多，舉凡在鄉里所舉辦的「施棺會」、「近取堂」、「卹嫠會」，對家族所舉辦的「彭氏潤族田」，對物命所舉辦的「文星閣放生會」，對鄉民所舉辦的「平糴賑災」等，這些慈善活動是彭紹升生命中重要的歷程，是他心懷慈悲，發願救度眾生的積極入世的實踐，因此，他都親自參與這些慈善活動，顯然這是他的人生志業，於是本文擬將彭紹升的「慈善志業」論述如下云云。
