Epigenetic Regulation by Natural Products in Cancer Chemoprevention and Chemotherapy

並列摘要

Emerging studies reveal that epigenetic modifications are associated with cancer initiation and progression. Natural products have been used in Asia for a long time to cure many diseases. Modern scientific studies in molecular mechanism provide more and more evidences to support the use of natural products against cancer. Mechanisms have been identified to explain and elucidate the preventive and therapeutic effects of natural products in cancer treatment. Natural products exert the efficacy in cancer treatment through altering the epigenome in cancer cells by chromatin remodeling or by reactivating silenced genes, demonstrating the potential of natural products as epigenetic agents. Epigenetic regulations modulated by natural products include DNA methylation, histone modification, and microRNA expression, which play a critical role in carcinogenesis. Polyphenols are the most abundant substance in medicinal herbs and dietary plants. A large number of natural products showed their strong therapeutic potential against cancer by altering epigenetic modifications. In this review, we introduce the epigenetic modifications by natural products and theirs therapeutic effects against cancers.
