Prevention of Cognitive Decline in Healthy Older Adults: An Integrative Review

摘要

With the increase in human life expectancy, the quality of the increased years of life mainly depends on how individuals maintain their cognitive ability. This study reviewed the concepts of cognitive aging and identified positive steps that can be taken to maintain and improve cognitive health. In addition, this review briefly examined lifestyle factors and interventions to mitigate cognitive aging, which come to implying the factors in terms of treatment and development. An integrative literature review was adopted in this study to evaluate published articles by using the key words "aging," "cognitive decline in older people," and "intervention" or "strategies" or "best practices." Articles published in English between 2007 and 2017 were searched in CINAHL Plus with Full Text from EBSCO host. The articles were screened and assessed for quality ultimately, 10 clinical trial articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. The analysis results indicated that seven interventions were explored for preserving cognition or optimizing cognitive function with or without cognitive impairment. Including diverse clinical trial interventions, lifestyle changes, and sensorimotor training have enabled the preservation of cognitive function among older adults.
