The purpose of this study was to establish a first-date script for college students in Taiwan and to examine whether the first-date script in Taiwan adheres to traditional gender roles. We created an open-ended questionnaire to investigate the dating procedure of university students who were asked to write down the activities and behaviors in order during their first dating. The participants were sampled from the students of 11 universities in Taipei. There were total 223 valid questionnaires (116 men and 107 women). By adopting the script analysis, we listed the activities and behaviors which are mentioned more than 25% of the participants and reordered it to establish the first dating scripts of men and women respectively. From the result, there were 20 actions in the dating script of men and 19 actions in that of women. In the dating scripts of men and women, 14 actions were common to both. Most of the actions in the first-date scripts of Taiwanese college students follow traditional gender roles, with men playing an active role, but women not playing a purely passive role. The women discussed the dating itinerary with the men, arrived at the dating place on their own, paid half of the dating fee, and made an appointment for the next date before the date ended. In the discussion section, we present practices for ensuring the success of dating. At the same time, we believe that the traditional gender role in dating should be loosened in the future of college dating.
