A Study on the Relationship between Perceived Risk, Continuing Involvement and Leisure Benefit of Participants in Surfing Activities

This study investigates risk perception among surfers and the relation between enduring involvement and the benefits among target surfers from surfing spots in north, central, south, and east Taiwan. A total of 368 questionnaires were distributed; after 21 were considered invalid and excluded, 347 valid questionnaires were collected, and the response rate was 86.75%. To test the hypothesis, the following statistical methods were used: descriptive statistics, independent samples T-testing, one-way analysis of variance, and stepwise multiple regression. The results and conclusions are as follows: 1. The majority of surfers in Taiwan are male and are of ages between 21 and 30 years; the most visited location is the Wushi Harbor in Toucheng ; and the surfing frequency is 2-3 times per month, the surfing time is at most 2-3 h per month, and the surfing experience is less than 1 year. 2. There are significant differences monthly frequency between males and females and depending on the risk perception. 3. There are significant differences in monthly frequency between males, females, and different age groups and depending on the enduring involvement. 4. There are significant differences in monthly frequency between different age groups and depending on the benefits. 5. The risk perception in a dangerous environment can negatively affect the enduring involvement and the benefits, and the enduring involvement can positively affect the benefits.
