The Disaster Aesthetics and Disaster Art Creations

Life is a long trajectory. There are ups and downs in life, and there is a beginning and an end to everything. The same is also true of our Earth; it conceives all life but also unleashes disasters. Where there is sun, shadow follows. Just like there are two sides to a coin, the interdependence, interactions and the give-and-take relationships between Earth, disasters and humans are complicated, difficult to be described with simple definitions, to distinguish what is right and wrong or to decide who should be accountable for what happened. The paper attempts to discover if there is any common ground between art and disaster. There is few systematic research or organized related data and discourse on disaster. By conducting this research and creating the collection, this paper wishes to offer a new representation of disaster and extract enlightening values from it.Disaster is Pandora's Box, only capable for inflicting pains; or so it seems. During the course of the research and in literature review, the researcher found that ”disaster” actually possesses hidden elements that can enrich art and creativity. The key elements extracted from ”disaster” are: terrifying atmosphere, twisted lines, eerie colors and unswerving humanity. These elements are further divided into four categories: belonging to nature, man-made, objective and unknown. Through painting, the creations integrates the analysis of ”disaster aesthetics” and understanding about the theme to deliver a mysterious and unique representation of disaster, in four sub-series titled ”firmament”, ”humans”, ”objects” and ”mystery”.This study found that the true aesthetic values of disaster art lie in ”salvation of disaster” and the ”power of soul”. This research can shed new lights on the topic and inspire the minds and souls of audiences, and help them see the love and compassion we need to show for the environment, creatures and people suffering from disasters.
