Due to its unique geographical location, Taiwan often suffers from natural disasters, especially floods and earthquakes. To make disaster prevention and reduction effective, the policy making for disaster prevention and reduction must be formulated on the basis of solid research outcomes and continuous long-term commitment on the work that are done by the government and required by the society. This article discusses the importance, promotion and operation mechanism, scientific achievements, and practical applications of the programs carried out by the Taiwan government on applying science and technology for disaster reduction in recent years and provides suggestions for future plans. The past efforts have apparently improved the government's efficiency and effectiveness on disaster prevention and reduction and gradually been consolidated into an effective mechanism for coordination, implementation, promotion, and integration of the disaster prevention and reduction.
