科大學生英文詞彙量調查研究

A Survey on Vocabulary Sizes of Students at a Technological University

摘要


研究指出科技大學學生的單字量明顯不足,而且,南部科大新生的詞彙量頻率僅在769字和1405字之間,約是國中二年級學生的程度(黃文禪、余光雄,2006)。教材方面,適合於一般大學用的英文原文教科書很多都不適合科技大學的學生使用。研究者任教的電子系所學生詞彙量平均1000字左右不及1500字,無法閱讀英文教科書,更無法以英文寫作科技論文。因此,本研究旨在調查電子系所學生詞彙量,了解其英語程度低落的原因,找尋方法來幫學生重建學習動機及自信,同時提升其英文詞彙量。

Researchers point out that the students at Technological Universities have insufficient vocabulary sizes. In addition, the vocabulary sizes of freshmen at the surveyed technological university in the south of Taiwan are ranged from 769 to 1450 words recognized as the level of 8(superscript th) graders. Textbooks written in English and frequently used in the universities might not be appropriate for students at technological universities. The researcher found his students from the Department of Electronic Engineering could not read English textbooks independently with lower vocabulary sizes around 1000 words, less than 1500 words,. The purpose of this study aimed at investigating the sizes of students' vocabulary by understanding the reasons for their deficiency, and discovering possible solutions to help students heighten their learning motivation and build confidence in learning larger vocabulary to meet the needs of reading English textbooks in their chosen fields.
