A Review of the Chief General Officer of Kinmen in the Qing Dynasty - With Chen Huacheng as an Example

Chen Huacheng, a historical figure regarded as a patriotic general by people in the Cross-Strait Four Regions, joined the Navy at the age of sixteen. He performed highly meritorious services and was assigned many important missions, but unfortunately died a heroic death. In commemoration of Chen, a road in New Taipei City was named "Huacheng Road," a plaque inscribed with the expression "Ci Yun Guang Bei" (widely bestowing benevolence upon the world) was erected in Kinmen, a memorial hall was built in Shanghai, and his former residence in Xiamen was listed as one of the first cultural relics related to Taiwan. This study adopts a literature review approach and tries to piece together the truth of General Chen's great achievements in defending Kinmen Town from the fragmented pieces in historical texts. The study attempts to answer the following questions: What was General Chen's tenure as the Chief General Officer in Kinmen? How long was he stationed in Kinmen? And what was his impact on or contribution to the coastal areas of Kinmen? The study has achieved the following findings. General Chen arrived in Kinmen three times and served as the 60^(th) Chief General Officer. He defended the country by guarding the maritime boundary, and fulfilling his duty of penalizing invaders and bandits. His actual tenure in Kinmen was about 3-5 years, and the only remaining plaque is still preserved in the Lingyin Temple. Chen protected the merchants and stabilized the pirates; he effectively deterred foreign invasions, and safeguarded people's lives and property. Guarding the coastal areas and defending the territory was General Chen's greatest contribution.
