Prevalence of Enterobius Vermicularis Infection among the Primary School Children of Taitung in 2015

Objectives. Enterobius vermicularis is a very prevalent parasite and presents major problems worldwide in both developing and undeveloped countries. This study investigated the prevalence of an E. vermicularis infection in children residing in eastern Taiwan. Methods. The adhesive cellophane-tape perianal swab method was performed to collect samples from all pupils in the first and fourth grades in elementary schools in one county of eastern Taiwan. Laboratory results were analyzed by Chi-square test. Results. In the 3,602 children (1,931 boys and 1,671 girls), the average prevalence of E. vermicularis infection was 3.47%. The first grade had a significantly higher prevalence than the fourth grade (4.29% vs. 2.79%). Boys and girls had a prevalence of 3.99% and 2.87%, respectively. Children residing in mountain areas had a significantly higher prevalence (8.56%) than those living in the plains and other areas. Conclusion. In this study, we found the prevalence of E. vermicularis infection varied according to age, gender, and area. Boys and children living in mountain areas are a higher risk than girls and children living in plains areas. More effective measures preventing infection by E. vermicularis are needed in the remote mountainous areas of eastern Taiwan.
