The Influence of Exercise Habits and PSQI Score on Physical Fitness in Central Taiwan College Students

摘要

This study was designed to understand the exercise habits, sleep quality and physical fitness in Central Taiwan University students. The participants included 802 students (317 male students with mean age 18.5±0.6 years, height 174.4±8.5 cm, weight 62.5±12.5 kg; and 485 female students with mean age 18.5±0.6 years, height 163.3±7.3 cm, weight 55.3±11.4 kg). Sleep quality was assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and physical fitness test were used in this study. Data was processed by SPSS for windows 18.0 system and analyzed using the independent samples t-tests, with the level of significance set at α=.05. The results were as followed: (1) 56.5% of students have no exercise habits. (2) 55.1% of total students have poor sleep quality (PSQI>5). (3) the group with exercise habits have better physical fitness performance, especially in standing long jump and cardiopulmonary function (p<.05). (4) the group of well sleep quality (PSQI≦5) have better physical fitness performance than the poor sleep quality group in standing long jump and cardiopulmonary function (p<.05). The exercise habit and sleep quality of middle area college students should be improved. We recommended that in future physical education should encourage students to participate in exercise, and to have regular exercise habits. We also need to suggest students to have more sleep time in order to promote sleep quality and to achieve the goal of healthy promotion.
