In this article, a model for the description of the reaction phenomena in the hot spot zone between the bath surface and top blown lance in a VOD process (Vacuum Oxygen Decarburizing process) was developed. The fundamental for solving reaction rates in the hot spot zone is that, using the flowrate and composition of reacted stirring gas, the flowrate of top blown O2, the equilibriums of second combustion and water gas shift reactions, and the conservations of each gas species in hot spot zone to simultaneously solve the reaction rates at surface of steel bath, the rates of second combustion and water gas shift reactions, and the flowrate and composition of off gas. The VOD model is able to be applied for the investigation of the effect of oxygen top blow on the degassing efficiency in VOD process.
