An Exploration of Leisure Transition and Adaptation of International Students in Taiwan

This study aims to explore the leisure transition and adaptation of international students. The author adopted the qualitative research method, designed the interview questions based on previous literature and Schlossberg's ”Transition Theory”, and interviewed 10 international students from National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. The findings of the study can be summarized in terms of leisure transition, adaptation, and the role of leisure in the adaptation of international students. Leisure transition consists of new pattern of leisure activities, continuity of old leisure activities and cease of leisure activities. while adaptation is composed of situation, self, support, and strategy, with each component containing sub-components.The elements of situation include transportation, city-country gaps, and language barriers. Self is made up of previous experience of leaving home, an optimistic attitude, and resilience. Support is two-folded- family and friends. Two types of strategy use were found in the study; one is active and the other is passive. The four roles that leisure played in adaptation of international students were refinforcing self-identity, expandingtworks of social support, reducing tension and stress, and facilitate learning. Some suggestions for future researches are discussed.
