A Comparision on the Effects of Different Type Yoga to Body Composition, Sleep Quality and Perceived Health Status of Middle-Aged and Old Women

摘要


Middle-aged and old women do not have exercise habit and experience physical changes that cause problems of health in Taiwan. This study intends to investigate the effect of different type yoga exercise, on body composition, sleep quality and perceived health of middle-aged and old women. Ninety-one women, whose age is 45-65 years old, are divided into power fitness with 31 members, hatha group with 30 members and non-yoga group with 30 members. Both yoga group members take yoga exercise one and half hour a day, two days a week for twelve weeks. Non-yoga group members do not take yoga exercise. After twelve weeks yoga, all participants are measured for the following items: body fat percentage, body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio, bone density, and fill out the questionnaires of the quality of sleep and perceived health. The data were analyzed by frequency, MANOVA and the results were as follows: 1. Both yoga groups confirm that the post-test improved than the pre-test on body composition. Non-yoga group confirm that the post-test improved than the pre-test on body fat percentage and hip circumference, but the post-test decreased than the pre-test on BMI, waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, and bone density. The power fitness yoga group have significantly improved than the hatha yoga group and non-yoga group bone density, (p<.05). 2. Both yoga groups confirm that the post-test improved than the pre-test on quality of sleep. Non-yoga group confirm that the post-test equaled the pre-test on quality of sleep. The power fitness yoga group have improved than the hatha yoga group and non-yoga group, but there was no significant change, (p>.05). 3. Both yoga groups confirm that the post-test improved than the pre-test on perceived health. Non-yoga group confirm that the post-test improved than the pre-test on perceived health. The power fitness yoga group have significantly improved than the hatha yoga group and non-yoga group, (p <.05). Therefore, twelve weeks of yoga for middle-aged and old women can improve their body composition, sleep quality, and perceived health status. The study provided good references for Middle-aged and old women health promotion and choose the power fitness yoga.
