Sound changes of the Huanhuan (桓歡) rhyme in the Zhongyuan Yinyun (中原音韻) rhyme dictionary could be reconstructed from comparing the pronunciations of Huanhuan in Jin dialects (晉語) and Lower Yangtze Mandarin (江淮官話). Generally speaking, the evolution of the Huanhuan rhyme from Early Mandarin to Modern Chinese has three forms: (1) *uɑn > uan (Mandarin Chinese); (2) *uɑn > uan > uãi > ueĩ > uẽ, *uɑn > uɑ > uƏ > uɯ (Jin dislects); and (3) *uɑn > uɑ > uõ > õ > ʊ (Lower Yangtze Mandarin).
