The current study explores to what extent Voice Onset Time (VOT) contributes to the place and manner distinction in Mandarin stops and affricates. Fifteen native speakers of Mandarin in Taiwan, and fifteen speakers of Korean and fifteen speakers of Vietnamese who learned Chinese as a second language (CSL) participated in the present research. They articulated a wordlist of Mandarin stops and affricates. The production of each subject was examined from the acoustic perspective of VOT. The results indicated a number of within-group and between-group differences for the L1 and L2 speakers of Mandarin Chinese. The L1 speakers significantly distinguished the Mandarin stops and affricates with and without aspiration in their VOT values, whereas the CSL learners from Korea, though endowed with a more marked L1 stop system, confused Mandarin stops with and without aspiration to a greater degree. Additionally, several between-group differences in the VOT production demonstrated that learners of different L1 backgrounds deviated from the native targets to a certain extent, but in different ways.
