The 1400-odd poems on objects written in classical style by literati in the circle of Shenbao in its early period rank only after the top popular focus on the theme of socialization among literati. Of these works, some are on flowers and plants, some on the objects around the poet, while some pay attention to the new situations in modern Shanghai. These poems excel in lively and detailed depiction of things. The present study of these poems published in newspapers and magazines aims to better recognize the efforts and innovation of these works in inheriting traditional poetics. It also offers a more detailed observation of the complex attitudes towards the social changes of the time, as well as the formation of their consciousness of humanity.
