Stabilization Effect of the Cationic Surfactant (CTAB) in Emulsion Polymerization

陽離子界面活性劑(CTAB)在乳化聚合的安定效應

本研究以陽離子界面活性劑(十六烷基三甲基溴化銨, CTAB)或其與非離子界面活性劑之混合物當作乳化劑,以2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane)dihydro- chloride (AAP)當作起始劑,進行苯乙烯乳化聚合,順利製備安定乳液。以皂滴定法測出CTAB在粒子上之分子面積為52+3(Å2)。CTAB安定乳液之能力與溴化十六烷基吡啶(CPB,陽離子界面活性劑),十二烷基硫酸鈉(SDS,陰離子界面活性劑)相當。實驗顯示乳化劑對粒子表面之遮蓋率與膜厚皆隨乳化劑含量之增加而增加。起始劑含量增加亦造成較高之粒子成核機會。

Stable latexes were prepared from the emulsion polymerization of styrene, using 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAP) as the initiator. The cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB, a cationic surfactant), or a mixture of CTAB and a nonionic surfactant (NS) was used as the emulsifier. The molecular area (Am) of CTAB was determined to be 52+3 (Å2) by the soap titration method. The CTAB shows a similar stabilizing effect as those of cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB,cationic surfactant) or sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, anionic surfactant). The study reflects that both the fraction of particles surface area packed by and the normal extension on particle surface of surfactant molecules increase with increasing the surfactant content. Increasing the initiator content also leads to the higher chance of particle nucleation.
