Study of Mammal Culture of Tauyuan, an Indigenous Village of Bunun Ethnic Group of Yanping Town, Taitung, Taiwan

We inquired the elder men and women of indigenous Bunun ethnic group about the mammal language and culture surrounding the Tauyuan village, Yanping Town, Taitung County, Taiwan during April 1999 to March 2000. We recorded 38 species or taxa categorized to 15 families of 8 orders. The Bunun people did not classify some taxa into genus or species Level, including the Chirotera, Soricidae of Insectivora, and Cricetidae and Muridae of Rodentia. Most mammal taxa could be named into species level, including the Primates,Lagomorpha , Sciuridae of Rodentia, Carnivora, Pholidota, Artiodactyla. Some species may be distinguished even as variety or ecotype that we suggest worth studying the gene diversity in Taiwan mountainous area, including the barking deer Muntiacus reevesi micrurus, wild boar Sus scrofa taivanus. The Bunun people usually called some mammals by different names according to their sex and ages, including the rocky monkey Macaca cyclopis , sambar Cervus unicolor swinhoei, serow Capricornis crispus swinhoei, barking deer, wild boar, black bear Selenarctos thibetanus formosanus and house dog Canis lupus famililaris. The Bunun elders also described the specific name and feature of wild dog different from house dog. We also recorded the names of body parts, and knew that they eat the mammals very thoroughly and conservatively, not only the soft tissues of meat and organs, but also the bones, marrow, even the shit pellets of deer. Hunting culture undoubtfully is the important relationships between Bunun people and mammals. Among 38 mammalian taxa, just 5 taxa are not the Bunun hunting objects and the house dogs are treated well for helping hunting. We also described the ethics, taboos, time and space, tools and technology of hunting culture. We think that the hunting culture of Bunun people originally includes the conservative idea and living. We hope the community based wildlife conservation mechanism could be established some days.
