The Reconstruction and Healing Work after Typhoon Morakot

This article points out the reconstruction work that was done, including the ”healing” aspect of the efforts, after Typhoon Morakot struck southern Taiwan on August 8th, 2009. The author adapts the concept of everything having a spirit and applies it in a personified way to all the reports that came from indigenous novel writers. Also, the author indicates that respecting cultural ritual and the cosmology of the indigenous people is not only important but inseparable from the reconstruction work. Therapists need to be tribe-sensitive and tribe-oriented rather than just simply applying a western psychology approach to the post-disaster reconstruction healing efforts. The author suggests that a therapist who is able to break away from the standard professional training may find a different way of bringing healing, such as creating dialogues between generations, a ”therapy” which can also help the tribal oral tradition to survive. By centering the therapy in the indigenous cosmology, the therapist may also benefit personally from acquiring a broader and deeper understanding of sky and earth, and may achieve an enhanced sense of self worth.
