摘要

本文探討當代英國小說家傅熬斯「法師」（John Fowles, The Magus）一書中「上帝遊戲」（the godgame）的意義，並說明書中的大法師孔奇士如何運用「上帝遊戲」迫使男主角厄夫洞察自身的偏狹與缺憾，引導他重新認識自己、肯定自己。文中進而指出：就此書之藝術旨趣而言，書中的大法師孔奇士是作家的替身，而男主角厄夫所扮演的角色則與讀者無異。厄夫的困惑在在預期了讀者的困惑，而厄夫試圖理解「上帝遊戲」的過程，為本書的讀者提供了一面借鏡。因此，「上帝遊戲」乃延伸為作者與讀者彼此競爭的遊戲。讀者必須掌握敘述的線索，釐出意義，以免為作者的詭計所困。

Freedom is the possibility of ”self realization” based on personal choice, on free contract and spontaneous endeavor, on individual initiative.... if one is trying to reproduce, however partially, something of the mysterious purposes that govern existence, then- one also has to go beyond some of the conventions man has invented , to keep those purposes at bay. That doesn't mean that in our ordinary lives we think such .conventions should be swept away. Far from it. They are necessary fictions. But in the godgame we start from the premise that in reality all is fiction, yet no single fiction is necessary.
