In this paper I shall argue that on Gadamer's hermeoeutics a correct interpretation could not be entirely different from the text, nor can it be completely the same with the text. Rather, a correct interpretation is in unity with the text in character so as to form a meaningful totality. In the first section, I indicate that a text essentially intends to reveal the meaning of the subject matter it deals with. Section Two is devoted to an analysis of the relationship between an interpretation and the text in terms of Gadamer's two concepts i.e., total mediation (totale Vermittlung) and fulfilled time (erfuelte Zeit). I shall then draw a conclusion that an interpretation is totally mediated into, and enriches, the meaning of the subject matter with which the text is concerned. That is what I mean by saying that an interpretation is in unity with the text. Finally, I propose that the unification of the text and an interpretation is base on two principles, namely, the subject matter and coherence. I shall further specify three characteristics of the principle of coher-eoce: correlation, comprehensiveness and penetration.
