Using three erotic novels written in the late Ming- ”The Carnal Prayer Mat” (Rou putuan), ”The Biography of a Slut” (Chi puozi zhuan), and ”The History of a Libertine” (Lang shi)-this paper examines how gender and spatial boundaries were ordered and transgressed in the late imperial era. The stories were set in the houses of middle or lower gentry who followed the ritual etiquette of confining women to the inner quarters on the one hand, and broke this rule in every possible way on the other. Transgressions occurred indirectly by peeping and eavesdropping, and directly by conducting affairs arranged through middle-persons and exchanging gifts and letters. The plots of these novels help us to identify a ”private” sphere of desire where people carried out their sexual activities. This sphere was constituted by the material background, such as doors, walls, lighting, cloth screens, beds, and clothes, as well as the common customs or lifestyle of the gentry class, which including sharing of sexual lives between male and female masters and servants.
