In order to improve the productivity and shorten the growth period of buckwheat in Taiwan, 7 varieties of buckwheat were introduced from Japan in 1990. In observation trials, the variety Yamano Uchi showed superior agronomic traits and higher yield than other varieties tested. A line 94-T3 was selected by mass selection and new lines were joined for comparison trials during 1995-1997. Due to the superior agronomic performance and early maturity line, 94-T3 was designated as Taichung Selection No. 8 (TCS 8) together with other new lines for regional trials during 1997-1998. Cultivation method experiment, quality determination, sensory test and pest resistant tests were subsequently conducted during 1999-2002. TCS 8 showed early maturity, higher grain number per plant, higher plant density, higher grain yield, and uniform maturation in consequence. The grain crude protein, crude fiber and ash of TCS 8 were also higher than that of Taichung No. 1. TCS 8 was approved and registered as Taichung No. 5 on January 15, 2009.
