The symptoms of insomnia are often presented as being uneasy to fall asleep, dreaminess and easy to wake up. The mechanism of sleeping in modern medicine is complicated; therefore, we try to understand it by reviewing sleeping mechanism and understanding correlations between sleeping and the central nervous system, endogenous substance and even genes. According to Chinese medical theory, sleeping is based on normal operation of Defensive Qi and alternating harmony between Yin and Yang. The pathogenesis of sleeping is correlated with the operation of Defensive Qi and Nutritive Qi, the circulation of energy through Meridian, and damages of internal organs. ”Qian-kun Line” is located in the horizontal line below the occipital bone within the ears, it's the conjunction line of 5 acupoints including Yi-feng, 1st An-mian , Yi-ming, 2nd An-mian and Feng-chi. It is efficient in curing insomnia by the Qian-kun line, which is supported by theoretical basis in modern medicine or Chinese medicine. Clinically, Dr. Hong-Chian Wu often applies acupuncture on the Qian-Kun Line to treat insomnia and definite satisfactory results are found.
