A CASE STUDY ON SEISMIC RESPONSE ANALYSIS OF GROUND IMPROVED BY COMPACTION

摘要

The effectiveness of the compaction method as a tool to improve ground is investigated by analyzing a residential area in Urayasu City which was damaged during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. Sand compaction pile (SCP) method was used to improve the ground and no damage was observed in the improved section, although the adjacent unimproved road underwent significant liquefaction. Liquefaction analyses were carried out at two locations, an improved site and an unimproved site. The analyses showed that the generation of excess pore water pressure was very low in the improved ground, whereas it was very high in the unimproved ground and resulted in significant liquefaction. These results agreed very well with the observed damage at the site.
