Owing to the reform brought by the "new history", ballads and proverbs are regarded as closely relevant with contemporary affairs, supplementary to the incomplete data of unofficial history, and conclude the experience and knowledge of contemporary society as well as reflect the mentality of the public. The catchy words and rhymes are the main features, and the content is closely bound up with the life of the people. Moreover, the ballads and proverbs quoted in Shih Shuo Hsin Yu and in its Chu are the important data for us to understand the political and economic atmosphere and historical features of the times from the end of the East Han Dynasty to the Wei-Chin dynasties. Through the sources from the historical records and classics, we can observe the understanding, interpretation and evaluation of the author and Chu writers for core events. Also, the ballads and proverbs reflect the contemporary cultural features of that time. On the other hand, we can see the common use of advertising language and the descriptions of calamities and abnormal phenomena in the ballads and proverbs.
