Effects of the Logistics Chain on Beef Exports of Nicaragua

摘要

Through a case review of the import-export process, this research explores the conditions and opportunities for Nicaragua's beef industry in order to understand the operations, main competitors, and risks that this industry is confronting. Utilizing the information gathered herein can help the country's competitiveness in this sector. From traceability requirements, we see that it is currently impossible to expand into the European market. Thus, we take the logistics chain of the beef industry to analyze the export/import process and regulations in European countries to find out why this traceability requirement has not been met and what factors are delaying exports to their market. This study combines qualitative and quantitative analyses to establish a broader method of analysis that includes hard data factors and the positions and interpretations of activities by meat industry players in the logistics chain. We interviewed 3 managers (as qualitative data) and combined their comments with quantitative analysis from the Logistic Performance Index (LPI). The results show Nicaragua is currently in a weak position to compete with other countries to export into Europe. Nicaragua does have the opportunity to improve its logistics chain to make beef exports more efficient. Traceability could be achieved in the next 2 years, thus allowing the country to export beef to Europe.
