Comparative Analysis of Horizontal Small Scale Wind Turbines for a Specific Application

並列摘要

Nowadays, the research and development of small scale wind turbines to be used in the built environment is in full growth, different systems and solutions being developed for an efficient exploitation of the available wind potential. The paper presents and analyzes a very promising structural configuration, consisting of two contra-rotating, coaxial turbines, a 2 DOF planetary gearbox and an electric generator, in comparison to conventional horizontal systems. The gearbox summarizes the two input motions from the contra-rotating turbines and increases it up to the optimal speed, required by the electric generator. This configuration is characterized by a very compact structure, high power density and increased efficiency, compared to other conventional solutions with a single turbine and 1 DOF planetary speed increasers. The contra-rotating turbine has to supply a wastewater treatment plant located near the University R&D Institute. Firstly, the kinematic and static features are determined, followed by the dynamic modelling of the turbines. The theoretical results are compared and validated with the aid of Matlab Simulink software, which simulates the functioning of the assemblies in the real environment. Finally, conclusions are formulated regarding the use of the wind turbines in the specific wind conditions of the built environment.
