Gospel and Culture: The Charismatic Movement among the Tayal Members of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan

This paper investigates the interplay between the traditional, shamanistic religious culture of Taiwan's Tayal tribes and the Taiwanese charismatic movement. In the charismatic movement, many congregants are filled with the Holy Spirit, though there are also individual seers who perceive visions, possess healing power, and urge participants to repent. In this movement, the laity has a direct encounter with the divine. The charismatic movement developed in the Presbyterian Church during the 1970s while the Presbyterian Church was experiencing rapid growth among Taiwan's aboriginal communities. The function of female seers in the charismatic movement offers a parallel to the shamans in traditional Tayal culture. The crux lies in divination and the direct encounter with divinity. Shamanistic activity serves the development of spiritual identity in the Tayal. Visions, dreams and healing are essential aspects of Tayal religious culture. The transformation of spiritual identity in the charismatic movement, which embraces an encounter with the divine, the discernment of charisma, and prophecy in mother tongues, extends and deepens the indigenization of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan.
