Forensic identification of post-explosion residues in debris material is of major interest to the investigator of a bombing, because it will help find the link between the explosive used and the suspect. The sensitivity and specificity of the mass spectrometer make it a suitable technique for the detailed characterization of commercial or military explosives and propellants. The purpose of this article is to emphasize some analytical forensic aspects of the use of mass spectrometry for explosives.
