Achievements in Music and Movement Curriculum Design by College Students in Early Childhood Education - A Study of the Interaction between a Teacher and Students of a Teacher College in Mainland China Taking Courses in a University of Science and Technology in Taiwan

With the goal of pursing teaching and learning excellence, universities all over the world are trying to introduce innovations to curriculum design and pedagogy. Therefore, it is important to explore whether or not these innovative curriculum designs and pedagogical approaches are effective. Based on the interactions between students of early childhood education from a teachers' college in Mainland China and those from a university of science and technology in Taiwan, this research project aimed to: 1. Compare features of the design of a music & movement curriculum for early childhood education at a teachers' college in Mainland China with those at a university of science and technology in Taiwan. 2. Study differences in learning motivation and achievement between students of the two schools after they took the same music and movement courses. The research found: 1. The curriculum design in the university of science and technology aimed to meet the needs and abilities of students and align with current occupational trends. In contrast, the curriculum design at the teachers' college focused on the importance of subjects based on the idea of knowledge system as the center. 2. For utilization of technology, teachers in the university of science and technology were required to provide outlines, course objectives, learning goals, learning ability indexes and weights, and evaluation tools in order to execute their courses. 3. For student motivation and achievement, students of the teachers' college had better learning motivation and attitudes. In addition, they were trained better in basic movements. On the other hand, students of the university in Taiwan were more involved in group discussion and had better imagination and creativity. As a result, the paper suggests: 1. Foundation courses in music and movement should be provided for students at the university in order to improve their professional skills. 2. Integrative or creative courses need to be provided for students in the teachers' college. 3. Sharing activities in music and movement courses between universities across the Taiwan Strait should be increased in order to benefit students from both locations.
