This study aimed to describe hospital nurses' experiences of workplace bullying and their adaptions to the bullying. Purposive sampling was applied to recruit 20 nurses who had been bullied at work. The nurses participated in in-depth interviews, which were taped and transcribed verbatim. Content analysis was then conducted on the data. Three major themes of workplace bullying experiences and related adaptions were identified: (1) Unbearable and irresistible nightmares: bullying behaviors in the workplace; (2) An inner storm: perceptions of workplace bullying; and (3) Survival acts: coping with workplace bullying. It is hoped the results of this study will not only contribute to knowledge of workplace bullying of Taiwanese nurses but also support hospital administrators in dealing with this bullying. It is recommended that methods of preventing bullying be developed, along with management strategies for responding to bullying events. In this way, the negative impact of workplace bullying on the professional development of nursing can be avoided.
