Characteristics of DUI Crime and the Impact of Situational Opportunity

Characteristics of crime and situational opportunities are the core issues in current criminological research. The major purposes of this study are to explore characteristics of situational opportunity and driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), to examine the impact of situational opportunity on DUI, and to discover means for preventing DUI. The analyzed data came from surveys conducted with 870 DUI inmates, including 88.5% male and 11.5% female inmates, in 2016. It was found that 43% of inmates had alcohol concentration less than 0.55mg/l. 83.2% of respondents had been banned by the police for more than 2 times due to UDI. There was a significantly positive correlation between alcohol addiction tendency, prior DUI record, and alcohol concentration. About 80% of the DUI vehicles were 50cc or more motorcycle, but the truck drivers had the highest DUI rate. Factors related to DUI had a stronger influence on the alcohol concentration. The situational opportunity was a salient factor in predicting the DUI accident. Preventive strategies of DUI and suggestions for future study are also discussed.
