The aim of this paper is to look at the increasing interest among urban population in Jakarta (and in other big cities of Indonesia) in Chinese medicine, treatment and dietary. The question which I will examine is: why are people interested to use Chinese treatment and medicines despite the fact that the Indonesian traditional medicines are sufficiently available and modern hospitals can be found in any big cities of the country? Do ethnicity and social class play a role in this case? Do people believe that Chinese medicines are particularly good for certain kinds of disease and why do they think so?
