A Further Look at Buddhist Education in Taiwan during the Period of Japanese Rule

摘要

筆者曾先後就〈日治時代的臺灣佛教教育〉為提，發表於《臺灣佛學院所教育年鑑》頁15∼19，及口頭發表於第十二屆國際佛教教育文化研討會（華梵大學，2002 年7 月7 日）。不過隨著研究歲月，新資料的發現，感到日治時代臺灣佛教界所從事的教育事業，有必要再作檢視，以求完整。此拙文想將之分為兩大類，即佛教教育及社會教育。佛教教育方面，將探討佛教寺院團體就僧侶培育所從事的教育情況，而社會教育方面則以臺灣佛教中學林、臺南家政女學院為主作研究。藉此兩大類教育事業的始末，來省思今日臺灣佛教界經營的佛學教育和社會教育，希望能從中得到些許經驗和啟示。

With regard to Taiwan Buddhist education during the period of Japanese rule, the author has published an article in The Educational Yearbook of Taiwan Buddhist Colleges and Institute, and given an oral presentation at the 12th International Seminar on Buddhist Education and Culture sponsored by Huafan University on July 7, 2002. However, as time goes by, new materials have been discovered. There is a need to do further research on the educational works undertaken by Taiwan's Buddhist community during the period of Japanese rule. This paper discusses two topics, namely Buddhist education and social education. On the topic of Buddhist education, I will investigate the sangha training programs of Buddhist temples and organizations. On the topic of secular education, I will focus on the Buddhist middle schools and Tainan Girls' College of Home Economics. From this historical perspective, I will reflect on current Buddhist and secular educational institutions operated by Buddhist organizations, and I hope that from this, some new understandings and insights may be gained.
