Reassembling Socio-materiality: The Differential Heritization of Industrial Equipment

The purpose of this paper is to put forward ontological propositions of heritage to deepen the discussion on heritage conservation. Heritization involves the interpretation, value assignment, display, and representation of objects, meaning their re-objectification and reassembly. In this article, examples of the preservation and display of equipment in industrial ruins are utilized to explore the relationships between social-materiality and preservation strategies. The results reveal that more attention should be paid to the characteristics of objects. The authors first review the positioning of physical objects as historical witnesses, symbolic objects for narrative identification, and performative objects for social action in heritage conservation. They next put forward the viewpoints of objectification, the relational ontology of objects, and the reassembly of social-materiality, to expand the possible forms of objects in heritization. Subsequently, they explain the material properties, heritization types, limitations, and possibilities for equipment using specific examples of the Ten Drum Creative Park at Rende Sugar Factory, CPC Corporation Kaohsiung Refinery, and Jianguo Brewery based on participant observation and second-hand data. The Zhounan Salt Field serves as a reference for non-industrial industries with less equipment, which can also be repositioned and reassembled to place heritage within the broader dynamics of social relationship, cultural performance, and place-making, while avoiding specimen thinking.
