A functional analysis of the collections and research of the National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS) was conducted. In total, 1,165,820 specimens have been recorded since 1983. The majority (63%) of the collections are zoological specimens, among which entomological specimens account for the greatest percentage (88.9%). Most collections were acquired during field work by staff of the NMNS. Only 2% of the specimens have been used for scientific research, whereas they have offered much work to foreign researchers from nearly 20 countries. Among the collections at the NMNS, a remarkable number of invertebrate specimens have been used in research, and entomological and mycological specimens have stably been used for research and academic publications.
