A fragmented discourse of living in troubled times - An analysis on the works in "The long road returning home" by CHOU HSIAO-HUNG

"The long road returning home", published by Kunlung, Beijing, is a collection of essays by CHOU HSIAO-HUNG (1932-2012), a contemporary writer in Taiwan. Some parts of this book narrate stories of a 16-year-old teen on his flee during 1948 to 1949. They can be regarded as footnotes to a big book about the troubled times. First, this article will focus on these fleeing stories and try to investigate how they reflect the author's introspection and comprehension as he looked back at his teenage life at his middle age. These stories were written in a humorous and calm way, but still able to detailed the real, daily struggles and sufferings of small guys in a tumultuous world. "To create history of mind from chatty and discourse" could characterize his works. Furthermore, this research will also examine, if personal stories like these can not only be seen as literary works, but also provide any profound cultural and historical meaning by documenting the small pieces of history.
