摘要

Background: Open thyroidectomy has been developed and safely practiced for one century. Although an incision created through the anterior neck offers adequate surgical exposure and access, it unavoidably leaves a scar that may hamper the esthetic outcome of thyroidectomy. Many surgical methods have been developed to avoid the scars over the anterior neck by designing remote-access approaches. Methods: A literature review Results: Transoral thyroidectomy has been one of the widely used surgical technique worldwide. No matter using endoscopic instruments or robotic surgical systems, transoral thyroidectomy can be successfully performed with surgical safety, excellent esthetical outcomes, low complication rates, and oncologically sound results. Development of transoral thyroidectomy has evolved from several fundamental surgical approaches and techniques, and is shaped into the current setting based on the contribution of experienced surgeons and evidence from clinical studies. Conclusions: Transoral thyroid surgery is popularized worldwide during these years, with increased number of patients treated. Further clinical trials will be conducted to verify the comprehensive utility of applying transoral approach for treating thyroid diseases.
