This paper discusses the relationship between general education and university education in regards to Religious Studies, and how Religious Studies can help achieve the goal of 'liberal education'. The paper consists of four parts. Firstly, the development of Christian theology and its influence on university education in the Middle Ages, as well as the continuity and innovation of Christian theology and Religious Studies in regards to educational goals in the 20th century. Secondly, the history and concept of liberal education in the West, and the views of contemporary scholars of Religious Studies on the value of liberal education. Thirdly, suggestions put forward by scholars of Religious Studies on how to reform liberal education in the face of modern-day challenges. Finally, the implication of Religious Studies and liberal education on universities and social development in Chinese society today.
