Christianity and modernity: A. Kojeve's reading of Hegel

並列摘要

Alexandre Kojeve is a famous French Hegelian in the twentieth century. His reading of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit mixed Existentialism and Marxism to understand historical process and to explore the birth of modernity. Modernity is related to the realisation of free historical individuality, which originates from the Judaeo-Christian anthropological tradition: man is negativity, the ability to transcend nature and to be free, which creates the dialectic of master and slave. The master and the slave stand for universality and particularity respectively Through labor slaves get the conscious of universality and create slavish ideology-Christianity as an attempt to reconcile universality and particularity. Christianity finds its real existence in Roman Empire. But if it wants to realise the synthesis of universality and particularity in the real world, it must go to- wards the moment of atheism, and only in the making of modern state this kind of Christian ideal can it be realised in the free individual. The completing of modernity means the end of history. Is the end of history an ideal state or an animal kingdom? It is a great challenge to human beings.
