On the Definition and Starting-point of Neoplatonism

The definition and starting-point of Neoplatonism is a disputing issue in the Western history of philosophy and theology. The fundamental problem is that Neoplatonism or any title of the like is added to a period of time or a group of people after the studies of later scholars emerge. The Ancient philosophers involved did not take the title themselves. Therefore, among scholars who study the history of Ancient Greek philosophy and the history of early Christian thought, some regard Ammonius Saccas as an initiator but some do not. Indeed, there are very little historical materials about him. But it is not possible to deny that his deep influence on Plotinus and other Neoplatonists . The much study on Plotinus, the much it seems not necessary to mention Ammonius Saccas as studies are more concerned with Plotinus. Be this as it may, my view on this issue is that we do not have enough evidence to deny Ammonius Saccas as the initiator of Neoplatonism, and it is not wrong to mention him III a brief introduction to Neoplatonism.
