Towards a Sino-Christian Scriptural Hermeneutics: On the Nature and Approaches of Biblical Studies In the Chinese Academic Context

摘要

並列摘要

This paper discusses the nature and approaches of Biblical studies in the contemporary Chinese academic context. After reviewing different approaches of Biblical studies and the Chinese academic context, the author believes that returning to the Canon, the most fundamental identity of the Bible in Judeo-Christian tradition, should be the starting point for the Chinese Biblical studies. Borrowing the terminology of "Jingxue" (Scriptural study) from Confucian scriptural tradition, the author proposed to construct a Hanyu Jidujiao Jingxue (Sino-Christian Scriptural hermeneutics) as an approach for Biblical studies in China. With this approach, it is possible to overcome the widening gap between Biblical study and theology, and to conduct fruitful, in-depth dialogues between the Bible and other humanistic disciplines as well as those Chinese religious traditions. The three elements inherent in the Bible are faith community, textual reality and divine presence. They should be recognized in this Sino-Christian Scriptural hermeneutics and developed into a theological discourse in the Judeo-Christian tradition. In this sense, the Sino-Christian Scriptural hermeneutics could be called "a prolegomena to theology". Finally, three hermeneutical principles for this Sino-Christian Scriptural hermeneutics, namely, restoration, listening and transformation, are presented.
