Saints, Demons, and Penance: A Preliminary Study of Alfonso Vagnone'sChinese Translation of Legenda Aurea in Ming China

並列摘要

This paper addresses the Jesuits' introduction of medieval European literature into Ming China, One example I discuss is Alfonso Vagnone's Tienzhu shengjiao shengren xingshi, which is Ming translation and abridgement of the well-known Legenda Aurea, a 13-century collection of hagiographies written by Jacobi A. Voragine, which includes lives of almost two hundred prominent saints. By exploring such topoi .as sainthood, monstrosity, and penance, I focus on the idea of sanctity as expressed in Vagnoni's Chinese rendition of the work. The saints whose biographies I deal with include St. Anthony, St. Augustine, and St. Mary Magdalene. I argue that the translation of the Legenda Aurea in the Ming is an epoch-making event in the history of Chinese translation of European literature.
