Literary Translations of the Ming Jesuits

摘要

並列摘要

In this paper, I give a general account of Jesuit efforts to translate European re ligious literature. I begin with Matteo Ricci's Treatise on Friendship and Eight Chapters of Western Lyrics, Nicholas Trigault's Kuanyi or Collection of Aesopic Fables, and Nicholas Longobardi's Life of St. Josaphat. I especially stress Alfonso Vagnoni's Illustrations of the Grand Dao, Classical Chreiai for Scholarship, and Science of Comparison, which brought to Ming China not only Greco-Roman moral anecdotes but also Renaissance rhetoric in the tradition of Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian. In this paper, I also investigate the Jesuit view of translation in the late Ming. I argue that although Ming Christian translators like Ricci and Li Zhizao tried hard to follow original texts so as to provide word-for-word translations, their efforts failed whenever the originals came into conflict with tenets of the Christian faith. Fidelity ought to be redefined to include fidelity not only to original texts but also to the doctrines of the Catholic church. Such Jesuit renditions of European religious literature therefore exemplifies what Andre Lefebvre has called "rewriting": they are adaptations, not merely translations.
