The discussion on Martin Luther and German Reformation in China since the First Opium War and the relevant issues have been further understood during the Period of the Republic of China. After the Reform and Opening Up of China, the substantial study of the German Reformation has gone through the transformation from political and cultural criticism to academic criticism against the background of contemporary Chinese thought. This article reflects on the topics such as: how to balance the tension between spiritual and secular life? how can spiritual life be beneficial to Chinese society? This article also justifies the relevant studies on social science and humanities in Christian/theological studies. Therefore, a new school of Reformation studies can be expected in the international academia with its cross-disciplinary characteristic and its concern from the Chine se context.
